Dear friends & family,
Last night at 9:45 the St. Joseph's Hospital ER called to tell us that Reagan's blood culture tested positive for bacteria. (She had been running a fever for 8 days and nobody knew if it was an infection or a virus or ??) They wanted us to come immediately to the hospital so they could administer a high dose of antibiotics. Today we will get a more advanced reading of the bacteria, but they 'think' that she has Listeria. We hate to speculate because they have told us that this fever was first, an ear infection, and then, a UTI, both of which were untrue. IF she has Listeria, we will go back to the ER today (3 ER trips in one week!) and she will likely need a spinal tap, more blood work, and potentially some other tests. Listeria commonly causes Meningitis. It is a bad bacteria, very bad. If her spinal tap is negative, then she will be treated for 10 days with IV antibiotics. If her spinal tap is positive, she has Meningitis and we don't know the treatment, except that Meningitis is a scary word and the fear of all pediatric drs.

The GOOD scenario, and what we pray for, is that while taking her blood, the sample somehow became contaminated and she really does not have bacteria in her blood.

The second prayer is that if she does have this bacteria, that it would be something way less worrisome than Listeria.

The third prayer is that if she has Listeria, she does not have Meningitis. And God give us the strength to treat her Listeria for the next few weeks.

The other positive news is that since our first ER visit, she has had no fever. She is laughing and running around and eating great.

As for Curtis and I, we are, of course, worried, and we are really tired. It is emotionally exhausting, these trips to the dr and ER when they poke her and prick her, on top of a long fever where we did not sleep much. We keep thinking, "How is this happening?" We are frustrated with our pediatricians office. Beyond frustrated, actually. So, pray for continued grace in our hearts and patience and stamina.

Thanks tons.

Oh, I am so sorry... that must be so hard on all of you. We are praying for you and especially for Reagan. Keep your hearts set in God's hands... He is in complete control and remember that God loves Reagan more than you ever could... rest in that knowledge!

I think the good news is what you mentioned: she is running around and laughing. That is always a good sign! Hold on to that as you go through tests.

Prayers are with you.

Praying for sweet little Reagan. And I agree with Crystal - that's encouraging! That was great to read.
